David Moltz, perfumer and cofounder of D.S. & Durga, shares a recent conversation with two different customers about the same scented candle. “One customer was like, ‘I can’t believe I bought it, I can’t smell anything, you guys are crazy,’” says Moltz. “And within a few hours, someone else wrote us a different email that said, ‘This candle is so strong, my whole house smells like it.’ Perception of strength really is in the eye of the beholder.”
